Mercury Thermostats

Mercury-containing thermostats are banned from disposal in the trash in Vermont and must be recycled through a special collection program. They are not accepted in blue-bin recycling.

Older thermostats may contain one or more small glass tubes (ampoules) containing silver-colored liquid mercury. Do not break or remove the mercury-containing switches.

Vermont’s Thermostat Recycling Program provides a $5 rebate for each qualifying mercury thermostat recycled at participating collection locations.
